The Olympic Aquatic Center was complete in 1991 and became a part of the facilities of the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens ‘Spiros Louis’. Two modern aquatic complexes, one outdoor and one indoor, were constructed in an area of 70 acres. Several major events have been hosted in the Olympic Aquatic Center, such as the Mediterranean and European Swimming Games of 1991. The main event, of course, remains the Aquatic tournament of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
Outdoor Swimming Pools
It includes:
- 1 50X25X2m depth outdoor competition pool of 10 lanes
- 1 25X21X5m depth diving pool with 1m, 3m, 5m, 7.5m boards
- 1 indoor small octagonal pool for divers warm up
- Electronic board
- Capacity: 8,000 spectators and 500 media (written and electronic press)
Auxiliary Areas
Apart from the pools, there are many rooms used in the everyday operation of the aquatic center and just as many used at games time.
- Press room for 250 people
- Closed circuit TV
- 2 dark rooms for film developing
- Offices used by several sport federations and authorities
- 1 main snack bar, and small snack bars operating at games time behind spectator stands
- Elevator for the disable, to have access behind the stands
- Elevator in the diving towers
- Parking lot for 100 vehicles
- 7 entrances: 3 main for staff, media and VIP and 4 for spectators
Indoor Swimming Pools
It includes:
- 1 50X21X2m depth indoor competition pool of 8 lanes
- 1 25X12.5X1.80m depth indoor training pool
- 1 25X12.5X5m depth indoor diving pool with 1m, 3m, 5m, 7.5m and 10m boards
- 1 indoor polygonal pool for divers warm up
- 1 50X21X2m depth outdoor competition and training pool of 8 lanes
- 1 10X10X0.70-0.90m depth outdoor pool for children learning
- 1 33X25X2m depth outdoor competition pool for synchronized swimming (new construction, capacity: 800 spectators)
- Electronic board
- 4 concrete pillars support the space frame of the roof, with a span of 108m, which is the biggest in the world
- Capacity: 5,500 spectators and 1,300 media (written and electronic press)
